What is a Dunnage Bag

  • Dunnage bags, also known as airbags, and inflatable bags, are used to secure and stabilize cargo. There are Woven Polypropylene (PP) dunnage bags, Kraft paper dunnage bags and Polypropylene paper laminated bags.
  • Woven Polypropylene bags are extremely durable and can be used in dry and wet conditions. These bags are best for extremely heavy loads and have greater elasticity than Kraft paper dunnage airbags for more surface contact with the pallets. Poly woven airbags material provides greater tear strength and superior moisture resistance than most other dunnage bag materials.
  • Paper dunnage bags are made out of two components, an inner component that consists of a polyethylene inner bag, the outer component is a paper bag. The outer bag is made of the highest quality, lightweight Kraft paper of high tensile strength. Paper dunnage bags come in different strengths and varieties and can be made in any special size. The inner component provides optimum pressure and the outer component provides optimum strength.
  • On Polypropylene paper laminated bags, the paper used on the outside of the bag is laminated on the inside with a woven polypropylene layer, which allows higher resistance to punctures and moisture.

Advantages of Dunnage Bags

  • Dunnage bags are very safe to use for both the shipping and receiving end of transportation and are waterproof. They inflate rapidly with compressed air, and are easy to install; compressed air is often available through an outlet in the truck's compressed air system.
  • Dunnage bags can be used in all modes of transportation. Besides being usable in all modes of transportation, almost every type of cargo can be secured with the use of dunnage bags, including breakbulk and palletized cargo, coils, barrels, cases, and crates. Some bags can be reused, and are ultimately recyclable.

The PP range is divided into Ecoline, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5 and 3D dunnage bags. Our
Level 1 dunnage bags are AAR certified and therefore meet the highest quality requirements in the market. The higher the level, the stronger the material that is used both for the inner layer and the outer layer. Compared to the kraft paper bags, the PP bags are resistant to chemicals and seawater. Moreover, they are easier to recycle. Compared to the kraft paper version, the inner liner (PE) must not be separated from the paper, as well as from the valve made of HDPE. Our standard widths are 60, 90 120, 150 and 180 cm.

The Kraft paper dunnage bags range is divided into 1-ply, 2-ply and 4-ply. 2-ply means that the outer layer consists of a double layer of paper. The inner layer is made of polyethylene (PE), as in the case of PP dunnage bags. Due to their stiffness, kraft paper dunnage bags are suitable for particularly narrow gaps. Paper bags can also be used several times and are fully recyclable.

An air compressor and an inflator are required to fill the dunnage airbags. All our inflators use the venturi technique which ensures a fast filling process. In addition to the air that comes from the compressor, the outside air is sucked in through a special flip-valve system. That way the airstream is more than doubled.
The most common filling adapter is the metal inflator with locking adapter (MI02), which is very robust and recommended for most users. A cheaper alternative is the PI 03 which is made of plastic. It is not as durable as the metal version but it also works for users who do use the tool not as often.

In case there is no air compressor at hand, the Bosch battery-powered blower (BI13 / BI15) is the best match. It guarantees flexible handling and saves the cost of purchasing a compressor. Approx. 80 – 100 dunnage bags (depending on size) can be filled with one battery load.
